Therefore, "Set aside Sundays to devote yourselves to Christ's teachings and to create oases of selfless love in a world where so often only power and wealth seem to count for anything." Pope Benedict XVI

A special plenary indulgence has been authorised by Pope Benedict to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Virgin Mary's appearance to St Bernadette at Lourdes.

The indulgence has been authorized in an effort to encourage faith and holiness, and is available to anyone taking part in either a public or private devotion to the Virgin Mary.

Special plenary indulgence for Lourdes pilgrims

A special plenary indulgence has been authorised by Pope Benedict to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Virgin Mary's appearance to St Bernadette at Lourdes.

The indulgence has been authorized in an effort to encourage faith and holiness, and is available to anyone taking part in either a public or private devotion to the Virgin Mary.

Catholic News Service reports that the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary Cardinal J Francis Stafford says Christian can turn to Mary in their effort to become more holy.

“Mary calls the faithful to her son and his sacrifice and to the love of the Father," Cardinal Stafford said.

He added that the indulgence can also be applied to the souls of the faithful in purgatory.

Catholics can receive the indulgence during two time frames.

Pilgrims visiting the Massabielle Grotto, where Mary appeared to St Bernadette, during the Lourdes jubilee year, which runs for a year from this Saturday (8 December), the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Pilgrims who visit any public sanctuary, shrine or other worthy place dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes may receive the indulgence Feb. 2-11. Feb. 11 is the day the first of 18 apparitions occurred and is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Feb. 2 is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord.

Cardinal Stafford said that, to obtain the special indulgence, one must fulfill the normal requirements set by the Church for all plenary indulgences. These include the person going to confession within a reasonably short period of time, receiving the Eucharist, and praying for the intentions of the pope, all in a spirit of total detachment from the attraction of sin.

150th Jubilee Prayer of Our Lady of Lourdes

Lord, you prepared Mary
to be the Mother of your Son
by her Immaculate Conception.
You kept her free from all sin.
For the fidelity
of her "Yes", from the Annunciation
to the Crucifixion,
we thank you, Lord.
In Lourdes, Lord,
you prepared Bernadette
to give witness
to the Apparitions of the Virgin.
By the openness and her courage,
her humility and her courage,
she thwarted all the traps of the cunning
and of the naysayer.
For what you made real in Bernadette,
we thank you, Lord.
And now, Lord,
as we prepare for the
Jubilee Year of the Apparitions,
prepare us for this time of great joy.
Help us to listen to the words
of reconciliation and peace.
Open our hearts, our eyes, that we may
embrace the poor and distressed.
That this Jubilee Year
will be a time of Grace
for those who come
to the Grotto of Lourdes
and for those who join with us in prayer.
Like Bernadette,
we want to receive the Eucharist
and to deepen our relationship with Christ
and to live by the Holy Spirit
more and more during this Jubilee Year,
that we offer through the Intercession of Mary,
your humble servant, and with the people
who have gone before us,
who have proclaimed her Blessed.
Gloria Patri et Filio et Spirtui Sancto,
sicut erat in principio, et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.

Please pray this prayer daily for everyone who goes to Lourdes during this special year of Jubilee.
